1. Transport actions
Longer copy
Air pollution is one of the largest environmental risks to human health and is linked to a range of health problems, including heart and lung disease.
By making simple changes to how we get around, we can all share in the immediate and lasting health benefits of cleaner air, help protect the planet and ensure that future generations can live happier, healthier lives!
Here’s three simple ways you can help to clean up the air this #CleanAirDay and beyond:
🚲 Walk, wheel, or cycle when you can, especially using quieter streets away from traffic

2. Don't Idle
Longer copy
Did you know that idling for just 30 seconds produces twice as much air pollution as switching off and restarting your engine? 🚗
Turning off your engine when you stop can also help to cut your fuel consumption.
Even small changes to how we get around can make a difference to the quality of the air we breathe.
By coming together to take action on air pollution in our communities, we can help both children and adults live healthier and longer lives, boost our local economies and make our communities cleaner and greener.

3. Health Inequalities
Longer copy
Everyone’s health is impacted by air pollution, but some people are affected more than others:
🧑🧒 Children are particularly at risk from the health harms of air pollution because their airways are smaller and still developing, and engine fumes concentrate at child height
🤰 Older people, pregnant people and people with existing health conditions are also disproportionately affected by the health harms of air pollution
🏠 People from racialised communities and those that live in more deprived areas are more likely to be exposed to higher levels of air pollution
You can reduce your contribution to air pollution by walking, wheeling, cycling or switching to public transport when you can. If you have to drive, remember to switch your engine off when you stop!
By tackling dirty air, we can also boost our local economy as breathing in cleaner air improves our productivity, reduces sick days and helps alleviate the burden on our NHS.

🧠 Brain health: breathing polluted air can make you more likely to develop mental health problems, and is linked with increased risk of dementia
🫀 Heart health: air pollution increases your risk of having a stroke – it can also increase the risk of heart attacks in susceptible people and is linked to high blood pressure and blood clots.
🫁 Lung health: exposure to air pollution is associated with lower lung function, as well as an increased likelihood of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer

7. Co-benefits of Clean Air
LinkedIn/Facebook
Air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to our health. Reducing levels of harmful air pollution in our communities will have health benefits for us all, helping both children and adults live longer and healthier lives.
By tackling dirty air, we can also boost our local economy as breathing in cleaner air improves our productivity, reduces sick days and helps alleviate the burden on our NHS.
Many of the solutions that will deliver cleaner air, like increasing use of public transport [ES1] and decarbonising our homes, will also help us cut carbon emissions and protect our natural environment.
